The old name of Laos is Lane Xang– “million elephants”, with wonderful landscapes, and friendly people in one of the last border in Southeast Asia.

The mighty Mekong River in the West and the Truong Son mountains in the East offer natural borders to Thailand and Vietnam respectively, while Laos also shares borders with China in the North, Myanmar in the Northwest and Cambodia in the South.

Laos offers incredible scenery and outdoor charms. A quiet, unrushed country, Laos is the perfect place for a leisurely tour through unrivaled natural and manmade wonders. Travelers consider it the least spoiled of Asian tourist sites.

Laos is gaining a reputation as an ecotourism destination. Its many rivers and pristine national parks are ideal for activities such as trekking, kayaking and diving.

While Laos does not offer a coastline or famed beaches, it does have 4,000 islands in the South, as well as the Khonephabangeng Falls, the largest water fall in Southeast Asia.

The capital, Vientiane, is more like a big village than a crowded Asian hub and life throughout the country moves at a slow pace. Most people come to Laos for a brief tour of Vientiane, the UNESCO World Heritage site Luang Prabang, and perhaps  brief detour to mysterious Plains of Jars.

However, those who make the effort to explore further afield, will be well rewarded with luscious landscapes, friendly people and unique glimpses of a country that has hardly changed for over centuries.

Vientiane

Vientian is an ancient city whose territories cover both banks of the Mekong river, Vieng (vien) in Laos language means “the city”. Chantha (tiane), a pali word, means sandalwood or the moon. Vientiane is the city of sandalwood and sandalwood is the symbol of vientiane. It is known as the city of the moon, as Laos people believe their origin to be from the that celestial body. In fact, even the design of the national flag has the image of the moon in the center.

Upon entering Vientiane, you will be surprised at the relaxed atmostphere and small town charming of this capital city. The city is characterized by the mixture of colonial French buildings and ancient temples, along with colorful markets. Vientiane retians a laid-back lifestyle. For many visitors, Vientiane remains something of a mystery, yet the country largest city has plenty to offer in terms of cutural, religious, historical and entertainment activities.

Luang Prabang

Nestled in the valleys of the mountainous North is Luang Prabang, a former royal capital and now a world Heritage site listed by UNESCO. This enchangting city, dominated by golden-roofed temples and bright saffron-robed monks, exudes a spiritual essance that will surely capture your soul.

The sleepy former capital is home to hundreds of monks who inhabit its more than 50 pagoda-like temples, and throughout town a languid air serenity mingles with a newfound sense of stylishness.

While in Luang Prabang, you will have a fantastic opportunity to participate in the daily morning ritual of monks collecting offerings of alms (often in the form of sticky rice) from the faithful residents. This tradition is verry unique in Laos, it being the only Buddhist country still preserving the ritual.
